John T. Deweese

John Thomas Deweese (born June 4, 1835 in Van Buren , Arkansas , †  July 4, 1906 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1868 and 1870 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Deweese was home schooled. After studying law and its made in 1856 admitted to the bar, he started in Henderson ( Kentucky to work) in this profession. He then moved to Denver , Colorado for some time . In 1860 he settled in Pike County , Indiana . During the civil war , Deweese served in the Union Army , where he made it to the rank of colonel of the infantry . After the war he moved to North Carolina. After the army was restructured, he stayed in the military until 1867, but was demoted to lieutenant, which was not unusual at the time. In 1868 Deweese was active as a bankruptcy administrator.

Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party . After the re-admission of the state of North Carolina to the Union, Deweese was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the fourth constituency of North Carolina, where he took up his new mandate on July 6, 1868. After being re-elected in the regular congressional elections in 1868 , he could remain in Congress until his resignation on February 28, 1870 . Deweese chaired the Home Office's Expenditure Control Committee and the Committee on Revolutionary Severance Pay.

John Deweese got into trouble while serving as a congressman when it was discovered that he was mediating appointments to various military academies for money. This led to an official reprimand from Congress and ultimately to his resignation. Deweese later switched to the Democratic Party . In 1876 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in St. Louis . Otherwise he practiced as a lawyer again. He died on July 4, 1906 in the federal capital Washington and was buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
