James Owen

James Owen (born December 7, 1784 near Wilmington , North Carolina , †  September 4, 1865 there ) was an American politician . Between 1817 and 1819 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

James Owen attended Bingham's Academy in Pittsboro . Then he worked in agriculture. Politically, Owen joined the Democratic Republican Party . Between 1808 and 1811 he was a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives .

In the congressional election of 1816 , Owen was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fifth constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded Charles Hooks on March 4, 1817 . Until March 3, 1819, he could only complete one term in Congress before Hooks regained his old mandate. Owen later became president of the Wilmington & Raleigh Railroad . He died on September 4, 1865 in his hometown of Wilmington.
