Greene Washington Caldwell

Greene Washington Caldwell (born April 13, 1806 in Belmont , Gaston County , North Carolina , †  July 10, 1864 in Charlotte , North Carolina) was an American politician . Between 1841 and 1843 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Greene Caldwell received an academic education. After studying medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and his license as a doctor in 1832, he joined the medical service of the United States Army . After later studying law and his admission as a lawyer, he began to work in this profession in Charlotte. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party .

Between 1836 and 1841 Caldwell was a member of the House of Representatives from North Carolina . In the congressional elections of 1840 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the eleventh constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded Henry William Connor on March 4, 1841 . The eleventh district was dissolved in 1842 and only re-established 90 years later, in 1932. Since Caldwell initially waived a candidacy in another district, he could only complete one term in Congress until March 3, 1843 .

In 1844 Greene Caldwell became head of the Charlotte Mint . During the Mexican-American War he was captain of an infantry unit until 1848. In 1849 he entered the North Carolina Senate . The following year he sought unsuccessfully to return to Congress. Then he returned to his roots as a medic and practiced again as a doctor. Greene Caldwell died in Charlotte on July 10, 1864.
