history

Belmont Benedictine Abbey ("Mary Help of Christians Abbey")

In the area of the present city a fort was built in the 1750s by the Dutch settler James Kuykendall to protect against the Cherokee Indians . However, the fort was never attacked. Further settlers built cotton mills and smaller trading companies in the period that followed . When the Atlanta and Richmond Air Line Railway was built in 1871 , more people moved to the area. The station was named Garibaldi Station in honor of the building supervisor John Garibaldi . The Mary Help of Christians Abbey was founded by Bishop Leo Michael Haid in 1876 and is still in use today. In 1895 the place was given its final name "Belmont", which was chosen in honor of the banker August Belmont . This was followed by the establishment of further textile processing companies, which contributed to the upswing of the city and earned it the nickname City of Diversified Textiles (meaning: "City of diverse textiles").

Today Belmont Abbey ( Mary Help of Christians Abbey ) with the attached private university Belmont Abbey College is a landmark and attraction of the city.
