John Steele (politician)

John Steele (born November 16, 1764 in Salisbury , Rowan County , Province of North Carolina , †  August 14, 1815 ibid) was an American politician . Between 1790 and 1793 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Steele attended Clio's Nursery School in Statesville and the English School in Salisbury. After that he worked as a farmer. In 1784 he became an assessor and in 1787 a councilor in his hometown. At the same time he embarked on a political career. Between 1787 and 1813 he sat several times as a member of the House of Representatives from North Carolina . In 1788 he took part as a delegate at a meeting to revise the state constitution. In 1788 and 1790 he was a negotiator in negotiations with the Cherokee and Chickasaw .

In 1790, Steele was in the second constituency elected by North Carolina in the US House of Representatives, where he took up his new mandate on 19 April 1790th After a re-election he could remain in Congress until March 3, 1793 . There he was a supporter of the federal government under President George Washington ( pro-administration ). Between 1796 and 1802 Steele was an auditor in the Treasury ( Comptroller of the Treasury ). From 1805 to 1814 he was a member of a commission that established the border between the states of North Carolina and Georgia . John Steele died in Salisbury on August 14, 1815. On the same day he was re-elected to the state parliament.
