William Franklin Strowd
William Franklin Strowd (born December 7, 1832 in Chapel Hill , North Carolina , † December 12, 1911 there ) was an American politician . Between 1895 and 1899 he represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives .
Career
William Strowd attended the public schools of his home country and then the Bingham Private School in Melbane . He then graduated from the High Hill Academy and the Graham Institute . After finishing school, Strowd worked as a farmer. During the Civil War he served as a soldier in the Confederate Army . After the war he also began a political career.
In 1875, Strowd was a delegate to a meeting to revise the North Carolina Constitution. He joined the Populist Party and ran unsuccessfully for Congress in 1892 . In the elections of 1894 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fourth constituency of North Carolina , where he succeeded Benjamin H. Bunn on March 4, 1895 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1899. During this time the Spanish-American War fell .
In 1898 William Strowd renounced another candidacy. In the following years he withdrew from politics. He died on December 12, 1911 in his hometown of Chapel Hill.
