Alma Shealey Adams (born May 27, 1946 in High Point , North Carolina ) is an American politician . She has represented the state of North Carolina in the US House of Representatives since November 2014 .

Career

In 1964, Alma Adams graduated from West Side High School in Newark ( New Jersey ). Then she studied until 1972 at the North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro . She then continued her studies at Ohio State University in Columbus until 1981 . Professionally, she was a faculty member at Bennett College in Greensboro from 1972 to 2012 . Politically, she joined the Democratic Party . From 1984 to 1986 she was a member of the Greensboro Education Committee; between 1987 and 1994 she sat on the local city council. From 1994 to 2014 she was a member of the North Carolina House of Representatives .

In the 2014 congressional election , Adams was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the twelfth constituency of North Carolina , where she succeeded Mel Watt , who stepped down on January 6, 2014 because he was head of the Federal authority Federal Housing Finance Agency was appointed. This made the election on November 4, 2014 in the twelfth district a double election. On the one hand, a successor to Watts was sought to end the current legislative period by January 3, 2015, and on the other hand, the new congress was elected. Alma Adams won both elections clearly against the Republican Vince Coakley and was thus able to enter Congress on November 4, 2014 . Since she was confirmed in office in 2016, she will also serve in the 115th Congress of the United States, which meets on January 3, 2017 .
