Earl Baker Ruth (* 7. February 1916 in Spencer , Rowan County , North Carolina ; † 15. August 1989 in Salisbury , North Carolina) was an American politician of the Republican Party .

life and career

Ruth studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill , where he received his Bachelor of Arts in 1938 and his Master's in 1942 . His Ph.D. followed in 1955. From 1938 to 1940 Ruth worked as a teacher in Chapel Hill and Charlotte .

After serving on Salisbury City Council from 1963 to 1968 and even mayor pro tempore of the city from 1967 to 1968 , Ruth was elected for the Republican Party in the 91st United States Congress. After winning two elections in 1974, his candidacy for election to the 94th Congress failed. Thus, from January 3, 1969 to January 3, 1975, Ruth represented the state of North Carolina in the United States House of Representatives .

From 1975 to 1976 he held the office of governor of American Samoa . He died on August 15, 1989 in Salisbury and was buried there in the National Cemetery .
