William Michael Crose

William Michael Crose (born February 8, 1867 in Greencastle , Indiana , †  April 4, 1929 in San Diego , California ) was an American naval officer. Between 1910 and 1913 he was the military governor of American Samoa .

Career

William graduated in 1888 Crose the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis ( Maryland ). He then began an officer career in the United States Navy , serving on various warships, including the USS Wheeling and the USS Kentucky . At the end of his career he reached the rank of captain.

Between November 10, 1910 and March 14, 1913, Crose succeeded John Frederick Parker as Governor of American Samoa. There he set up an education committee. He also filled the position of a naval chaplain and a naval doctor. He successfully campaigned for the renaming of Tutuila - that was the official name of his territory at the time - in American Samoa. This request was granted. He was the first governor of the territory who was also officially allowed to call himself "Governor of American Samoa". The predecessors were governors of Tutuila , even if they are known today as American Samoa.

During the First World War , William Crose served as captain of the warship USS North Dakota . He was awarded the Navy Cross for his military achievements . He died in San Diego on April 4, 1929.
