John Gould Moyer

John Gould Moyer (born July 12, 1893 in Chicago , Illinois , †  January 21, 1976 in Honolulu , Hawaii ) was an American naval officer. Between 1942 and 1944 he was the military governor of American Samoa .

Career

John Moyer was born in Chicago and grew up in Delphi ( Indiana on). Between 1910 and 1914 he graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis ( Maryland ). In the following years he served as an officer in the United States Navy . At the end of his military career on June 30, 1949, he had made it to the position of Rear Admiral.

Between June 5, 1942 and February 8, 1944, he succeeded Laurence Wild as Governor of American Samoa. Because of the climatic conditions, he suggested reducing the service time of the American troops stationed there from 18 to twelve months. His time as governor was marked by the events of World War II . At that time he also commanded the Marine Corps soldiers stationed on his island . Nothing is known about the life of John Moyer after retiring from the military in 1949. He died in Honolulu on January 21, 1976.
