Gatewood Lincoln

Gatewood Sanders Lincoln (born August 5, 1875 in Liberty , Clay County , Missouri , †  October 15, 1957 ) was an American naval officer. Between 1929 and 1932, with one interruption in 1931, he was the military governor of American Samoa .

Career

Gatewood Lincoln was a second cousin of President Abraham Lincoln . He first attended William Jewell College in his hometown of Liberty. In 1896 he graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis ( Maryland ). In the years that followed, he served as an officer on various ships in the US Navy , including the USS Philadelphia and the USS Powhatan . He also took part in World War I and was awarded the Navy Cross for his military achievements .

Gatewood Lincoln was Governor of American Samoa between August 2, 1929 and March 24, 1931 and again from July 17, 1931 to May 12, 1932. During the 1930s he was on the Advisory Committee of the United States Shipping Board . He also acted as an advisor to the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in California . During the Second World War , Lincoln commanded a warship in the Pacific. After the war, he headed the physics department of the Naval Academy in Annapolis. When he retired from the military, he had reached the rank of captain. He died on October 15, 1957.
