Frank Barnett

Frank Barnett (born July 20, 1933 in Atlanta , Georgia , † July 15, 2016 in Knoxville , Tennessee ) was an American politician . Between October 1976 and May 1977 he was governor of American Samoa .

Career

Frank Barnett worked as a lawyer in Tennessee . At times he also worked as an agent for the FBI . Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party . Between 1974 and 1976 he was Lieutenant Governor of American Samoa.

On October 1, 1976, Barnett was appointed to succeed Earl B. Ruth as the new governor of American Samoa and was introduced to this office in January 1977. He held this position until May 27, 1977. His term of office was controversial. The population of his territory was divided into two camps. One group accused him of exploiting and taking advantage of the local people, the other supported him. The conflict was triggered by the dismissal of the then Minister of Education Mere Betham. This was discontinued soon afterwards and the conflict was gradually defused. In May 1977 Barnett was replaced by Hyrum Rex Lee .
