Thomas Darden
Thomas Francis Darden Jr. (born September 8, 1900 in New York City , † June 17, 1961 ) was an American naval officer. Between 1949 and 1951 he was the military governor of American Samoa .
Career
Thomas Darden was an adult officer in the United States Navy , where he made it to captain. He served on various ships and was a staff officer at two admirals at different times during World War II . In the meantime he also commanded the destroyer USS Benham and the light cruiser USS Denver used in the Pacific . He was involved in several skirmishes. He campaigned for racial integration in the Navy. In the 1940s, he directed a special training program for African Americans to improve their chances of promotion within the Navy.
Between July 7, 1949 and February 23, 1951, he succeeded Vernon Huber as the last military governor of American Samoa. All of his successors were then civilians.
