Lawrence M. Judd
Lawrence McCully Judd (born March 20, 1887 in Honolulu , Hawaii , † October 4, 1968 ibid) was the seventh Territorial Governor of Hawaii and held this office from 1929 to 1934. Judd was Governor of American Samoa from March 4, 1953 to October 1 of the same year .
Judd was best known for his pardon and conversion of a conviction against Grace Hubbard Fortescue that the Court of Hawaii because of the manslaughter of Joseph Kahahawai , in connection with the so-called Massie affair , was sentenced to ten years in captivity. Instead, he ordered a one-hour stay in his office. Fortescue's daughter, Thalia Fortescue Massie, had previously accused several locals and Japanese residents of rape . Since each of the accused could not have committed the crime, the charges were dropped, to her father's displeasure.
