John Waihee

John Waihee III (born May 19, 1946 in Honokaʻa , Hawaii ) is an American politician . He was the fourth governor of the US state of Hawaii from 1986 to 1994 .

Career

John Waihee was born in Honokʻaa, Hawaii County , in 1946 . He received his bachelor's degree in history and business from Andrews University , Michigan , and his law degree from the University of Hawaii in 1976 . His political career began in 1978 with the election to the Constitutional Convention . In 1980 he was elected to the Hawaii House of Representatives, and in 1982 he was elected Vice Governor of Hawaii. In 1986 he was elected to succeed George Ariyoshi as the fourth governor of Hawaii; he was the first elected native governor of Hawaii. His term of office ran from December 1, 1986 to January 5, 1994; a further candidacy was not possible according to the state constitution. He was succeeded by his lieutenant governor Ben Cayetano .
