Thomas Ponce Gill
Thomas Ponce Gill (born April 21, 1922 in Honolulu , Hawaii , † June 3, 2009 ibid) was an American politician .
Life
Gill attended the University of Hawaii in 1940 and 1941 . From December 1941 to October 1942 he was a member of the Hawaii Territorial Guard . He then served in the US Army and fought in New Guinea and the Philippines . In November 1945, Gill retired from active service. During his time in the Army, he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart . He now continued his studies and attended the University of California . There he completed his studies in 1948 and continued to study at the university's law school until 1951 . That same year, Gill was accepted into the bar and practiced in Honolulu.
Between 1954 and 1958 he was chairman of the local branch of the Democratic Party in Oahu County ( Oahu County Democratic Committee ). In 1960 he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention . Gill was a member of the territorial parliament and was also represented in the new state's House of Representatives from 1959 to 1962 . He was elected to Congress as a Democrat and represented his home state in the US House of Representatives from January 3, 1963 to January 3, 1965 . In 1964, he did not run again for a seat in the House of Representatives, but tried to be elected to the US Senate . Here, however, he had to admit defeat to the Republican incumbent Hiram Fong .
Gill was the director of the Hawaii Office of Economic Opportunity from 1965 to 1966 and served as the lieutenant governor of Hawaii from 1966 to 1970 . He then withdrew from politics and began practicing again in his previous profession. He last lived in Honolulu.
