Nelson Doi

Nelson Kiyoshi Doi (born January 1, 1922 in Pahoa , Territory of Hawaii , † May 16, 2015 in Waimea , Hawaii ) was an American politician . Between 1974 and 1978 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Hawaii.

Career

Nelson Doi graduated from the University of Hawaii . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . He was a delegate to the Constituent Assembly of Hawaii in 1950, where he drafted some future laws that came into effect when the state was founded in 1959. Doi sat in the territorial senate between 1955 and 1959. Then he was a member of the Hawaii Senate until 1969 . In 1968 he took part as a delegate at a constitutional convention of his state. Since 1970 he has worked as a district judge. In the same year he ran unsuccessfully for the office of lieutenant governor.

In 1974, Doi was elected lieutenant governor of Hawaii alongside George Ariyoshi . He held this post between December 2, 1974 and December 2, 1978. He was Deputy Governor . After serving as lieutenant governor, he unsuccessfully applied for the office of mayor of Honolulu . For some time he was a judge in the Marshall Islands . After that he worked as a teacher in several schools in Japan . He then returned to Hawaii, where he helped build a hospital.
