William S. Richardson

William Shaw Richardson (born December 22, 1919 in Honolulu , Hawaii Territory , †  June 21, 2010 ibid) was an American politician and lawyer . Between 1962 and 1966 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Hawaii .

Career

William Richardson attended Roosevelt High School in Honolulu and then the University of Hawai'i . He then studied law at the University of Cincinnati in Ohio . During the Second World War he was a captain in the United States Army . He served in an infantry unit, which mainly consisted of Filipino soldiers ( 1st Filipino Infantry ). Even after the end of the war he remained in the Army until 1946, when he was a member of the Judge Advocate General's Corps . He then practiced as a private lawyer.

Politically, Richardson joined the Democratic Party . From 1956 and 1962 he was its chairman in Hawaii. In 1956 and 1960 he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Conventions . He also served as Chief Clerk in the Territory of Hawaii Senate from 1955 to 1959 . He was also President of the Hawaii Bar Association from 1961 to 1962.

In 1962, Richardson was elected lieutenant governor of Hawaii alongside John Anthony Burns . He held this office between December 2, 1962 and December 2, 1966. He was Deputy Governor . Between 1966 and 1982 he served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Hawaii as Chief Justice of the state. In this capacity he made a name for himself when he campaigned against economic interests in some fundamental judgments for the protection of nature and especially the beaches. After serving as Chief Justice , William Richardson was the curator of the Kamehameha Schools from 1983 to 1992 . He died in Honolulu on June 21, 2010.
