Life

Meinhold studied in Bethel and Berlin and received his licentiate as a theologian in 1934 . He was a student of Erich Seeberg . In 1935 he completed his habilitation in Berlin and was a private lecturer there. In 1935/36 he was a substitute professor at the University of Heidelberg and in 1936 he became an associate professor in Kiel. From 1939 he was a member of the NSDAP . During the Second World War he was a pastor in the Wehrmacht and after the war he was a full professor in Kiel until his retirement in 1975. From 1976 to 1981 he then worked at the Institute for European History in Mainz as head of the department for the history of religion and did research, for example, on ecumenism.

From the 1930s he dealt with Martin Luther . He attracted attention with the thesis of 1936 that the publications of Martin Luther's Genesis lecture, which stretched out over ten years from 1535 and occupied him in the last decade of his life, were not to be trusted. They are said to have been published by students who had represented interests in the directional struggles of Protestantism in the decades after Luther's death. Meinhold's book determined the preoccupation with this topic for decades.

In 1955 he received an honorary doctorate in Marburg.

From 1938 to 1955 he was co-editor of the magazine for church history .
