Jean King

Jean Sadako King (born December 6, 1925 in Honolulu , Territory of Hawaii , †  November 24, 2013 there ) was an American politician . Between 1978 and 1982 she was lieutenant governor of the state of Hawaii .

Career

Jean King was the daughter of a Caucasian father and a Japanese mother. She graduated from the University of Hawaii and then New York University . Politically, she became a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1972 and 1974 she was a member of the House of Representatives from Hawaii ; from 1974 to 1978 she was a member of the State Senate .

In 1978 King was elected Lieutenant Governor of Hawaii alongside George Ariyoshi . She held this office - as the first woman - between December 2, 1978 and December 2, 1982. She was Deputy Governor . In 1982 she ran unsuccessfully for governor. After that it no longer appeared politically. She died in Honolulu on November 24, 2013.
