George Ryoichi Ariyoshi ( Japanese 有 吉 良 一 , Ariyoshi Ryōichi ; born March 12, 1926 in Honolulu , Hawaii ) is a former American politician ( Democratic Party ). He was the third governor of the US state of Hawaii.

Career

George Ariyoshi was born in Honolulu in 1926 and is the first American of Japanese descent to serve as governor of the United States. At the end of the Second World War he served as an interpreter for the Military Intelligence Service of the US Army in Japan. After the war he first attended the University of Hawaii and then Michigan State University , where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts . Subsequently, Ariyoshi was elected to the State of Hawaii House of Representatives, four years later to the Territorial Senate and finally, after joining the Union, to the State Senate . In 1973 he was elected to the post of lieutenant governor ; in the same year he temporarily took over the duties of the sick Governor John A. Burns , whom he represented for the rest of his term of office. In 1974 he won the gubernatorial election himself with 54.6 percent of the vote against the Republican Randolph Crossley ; In 1978 and 1982 he was re-elected.

As governor, he presided over the Western Governors 'Conference in 1978 and first chaired the newly formed Western Governors' Association in 1984 and 1985. He was also a member and president of the Pacific Basin Development Council and a member of the Standing Committee of the Pacific Islands Conference . He was also a member of the House of Delegates of the American Bar Association in 1969 , was president of the Hawaii Bar Association , the Hawaii Bar Foundation, and the Military Intelligence Service Veterans Club . As a businessman, he was the corporate director of First Hawaiian Bank , Honolulu Gas Company, and Hawaiian Insurance and Guaranty Company . After leaving public office, he joined Ing & Kawashima law firm specializing in international advice on business between Hawaii and the United States.

The Michigan State University awarded him in 1979 the honorary doctorate .
