James Aiona

James R. "Duke" Aiona Jr. (born June 8, 1955 in Pearl City , Hawaii Territory ) is an American politician . Between 2002 and 2010 he was lieutenant governor of the state of Hawaii .

Career

James Aiona graduated from the Saint Louis School in Honolulu and then until 1977 studied political science at the University of the Pacific in Stockton ( California ). He then studied until 1981 at the School of Law of the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa law. In the following years he practiced several legal professions. Initially, he was the assistant prosecutor for Honolulu and the surrounding area. Since 1990 he has held various judgeships in Hawaii. Politically, he became a member of the Republican Party .

In 2000, Aiona was elected Lieutenant Governor of Hawaii alongside Linda Lingle . He held this office after a re-election between December 4, 2002 and December 6, 2010. He was Deputy Governor . The focus of his political work was the fight against drugs and drug abuse as well as excessive alcohol consumption.

In 2010, James Aiona ran for governor of Hawaii, but was defeated by Democrat Neil Abercrombie with 41:58 percent of the vote. Four years later he ran again for his party. In the actual election on November 4, 2014 , Aiona competed unsuccessfully against the Democratic State Senator David Ige and the non-party Mufi Hannemann and received 37 percent of the vote. 49 percent of voters were in favor of Ige, while Hannemann made up just under twelve percent.
