Life

Patrick Marber is the son of Brian and Angela Marber. Successively he attended Rokeby Preparatory School, St Paul's School (London) , Cranleighs School and Wadham College in Oxford . After completing his English studies, he worked for several years as a stand-up comedian in London and as a writer and performer for the radio shows On the Hour and Knowing Me, Knowing You , which resulted in spin-offs ( The Day Today , Paul and Pauline Calf's Video diaries ). Among other roles, Marber portrayed the hapless reporter Peter O'Hanraha-hanrahan. He later also invented some new characters and recorded commentary for the series' DVD release.

His first play, which he also directed, was titled Dealer's Choice and premiered in 1995 at the Royal National Theater in London. It is set in an Italian restaurant, consists of three acts and has an all-male cast. The third act deals with the game of poker and is based on Marber's own experience with gambling addiction . For his play, the author received the Evening Standard Prize for Best Comedy and the West End Frame Award. The 1997 season opened at London's Royal National Theater with his play Closer , a comedy about sex, dishonesty and betrayal. Closer became an international success and has been translated into more than thirty languages.

With his play Howard Katz , which is about a middle-aged man struggling with life, death and religion, Marber was not quite as successful. The work, which was performed at the London National Theater in 2001, received less critical reviews than Marber's previous work and was not a commercial success either.

The author also studied August Strindberg's tragedy Miss Julie and wrote a free adaptation, the plot of which he moved to an English country house in 1945, the time the British Labor Party was just about to celebrate its famous landslide election victory during the celebrations of Victory in Second World war . Directed by Michael Grandage , the play premiered in 2003 in London's Donmar Warehouse with Kelly Reilly , Richard Coyle and Helen Baxendale in the lead roles.

In 2004, Marber's drama Closer , directed by Mike Nichols, starring Natalie Portman , Jude Law , Julia Roberts and Clive Owen was made into a film and won two Academy Awards . Natalie Portman was nominated for "Best Supporting Actress" and Clive Owen for "Best Supporting Actor" . The film was also nominated in several categories for the Golden Globe Awards 2005 , the British Academy Film Award 2005, the Online Film Critics Society Award 2004, and other awards.

Marber worked as a co-writer on the screenplay written by David Mackenzie for Asylum (2005). For the film Notes on a Scandal ( Notes on a Scandal ) from a novel by Zoe Heller , he was the sole screenwriter. For his work, he received an Oscar nomination for "Best Adapted Screenplay" .

Don Juan in Soho by Marber, based on Molière's Don Juan , was staged again in 2006, directed by Michael Grandage and starring Rhys Ifans . In 2007 Marber's play The Musicians came out, which premiered with Alfred Molina in the title role by the Roundabout Theater Company. His adaptation of Trelawny of the Wells was shown for the first time in February 2013 at Donmar Warehouse in London.
