David Mackenzie

David Mackenzie (born May 10, 1966 in Corbridge ) is a British film director .

Life

Mackenzie began his film career with the production of short films . In 1997, he won his first prize for his twenty-minute film California Sunshine . The film is about the life of two small dealers, for one role he cast his younger brother Alastair Mackenzie , who was to be cast again and again in David's subsequent works.

In 1999 he won the audience award of the Brest European Short Film Festival for the film Marcie's Dowry , in 2000 he won the second prize for the best short film at the Dresden Film Festival for Somersault (shot in 1999) . Mackenzie shot a total of nine short films and documentaries before he made his first full-length feature film. In 2002 he shot The Last Great Wilderness on a tight budget , in which his brother Alistair also played and worked on the script. Internationally, David Mackenzie was first noticed with the 2003 film Young Adam , whose plot is based on the 1954 novel by Alexander Trocchi of the same name . He was able to cast the leading roles with Tilda Swinton and Ewan McGregor and won the 2003 Best New British Feature Award at the Edinburgh International Film Festival with them . With the film, he was named British Newcomer of the Year by the London Critics' Circle Film Award in 2004. Other film festivals followed, and Young Adam was included in worldwide cinema distribution. Other of his films are Asylum (2005) with Natasha Richardson , based on a novel by Patrick McGrath , and Hallam Foe - This Is My Story (2007) based on a novel by Peter Jinks . A film adaptation of the life story of the German singer Nico with Tilda Swinton in the lead role, planned for 2006 , has not yet been implemented for unknown reasons.

The movie Toy Boy with Ashton Kutcher and Anne Heche appeared in 2009 and received in America mainly bad reviews. His 2011 film You Instead was nominated for both BAFTA and British Independent Film Awards that same year , but failed to win.

In late June 2017, Mackenzie became a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences .

His film Hell or High Water was released in 2016 and received a positive response from critics and audiences. At the 2017 Academy Awards , Hell or High Water received nominations in four categories, including Best Picture and Best Screenplay.
