Schauburg Dresden - 31st Dresden Film Festival

The Dresden Film Festival has been a short film festival that has been held annually since 1989 . The focus in the competition is on short fiction films and animated films.

When the Dresden Film Festival was held for the first time before the fall of the Wall , it was used to present to the public films that were previously banned or rarely shown in the GDR . After German reunification , the focus of the festival inevitably had to change. Since DEFA's animation studios were located in Dresden , the decision was made to set up a short and animated film festival.

The international competition of the festival has existed since 1992 and in 1998 a separate national competition followed, in which the advancement award of the Saxon State Minister for Science and Art, endowed with 20,000 euros, has been awarded since 2004. With a total of around 66,000 euros in prize money, the Dresden Film Festival is one of the most highly endowed short film festivals in Europe. The “Golden Rider” based on the equestrian statue of the same name is awarded as the prize for the best animated and feature films in the competitions . There are also audience awards , the “Golden Rider” for film sound and the ARTE short film award.

In addition to the competitions, the festival week offers an extensive range of special programs with thematic and country focuses, retrospectives and children's films. This also includes a series of focal points which each year focuses on a specific topic and illuminates this in several film programs. In April 2016, for example, the retrospective was devoted to the topic of Films for Security , curated by Diana Ivanova .

The section "etc. - events, trainings, connections ”has been supplementing the film offer since 2012 with panel discussions, lectures, workshops, exhibitions and receptions and is aimed at both trade visitors and the interested public.
