The National Theater is a London- based theater . It is located on Waterloo Bridge on the Thames in the renovated part of the South Side on the Thames Foot Path.

The theater was built between 1967 and 1976 based on designs by the architect Denys Lasdun . It is considered a striking example of architectural brutalism with the use of exposed concrete as a prominent feature. The architecture of the building was the subject of public discussion. So thought Prince Charles that it was like a nuclear power plant. The Royal National Theater was voted one of the ten most popular and ten most hated buildings in London by the people of London. It consists of three theaters:

  • Lyttelton Theater : Hall with a classic front stage and 890 seats.
  • Olivier Theater : Hall in semicircular shape based on the model of the Greek theater with 1200 seats.
  • Dorfman Theater (formerly "Cottesloe Theater"): A relatively small hall (400 seats) based on the model of a medieval hostel courtyard (the former theater of the rural population); here the experimental theater is also emphasized by the great variability of the seating.

The theater's first director was Laurence Olivier , after whom the largest of the three stages was named. The current director is Nicholas Hytner . The first chairman of the board was Oliver Lyttelton, 1st Viscount Chandos , after whom the main stage is named. A fourth stage, the so-called “Temporary Theater”, existed from 2013 to 2016. With 225 seats it was the smallest game room and was used for several new works of the black theater .

The National Theater is the only theater in London that has a repertoire; H. the pieces change every five days and repeat after two weeks, so that a total of over 25 productions run during the season. In summer, free events such as plays, lounges, circus etc. take place on the forecourt. About 40 percent of the ensemble theater is subsidized by the government, the remaining 60 percent comes from donations and the theater. The hallmark is the Flytower, which rises above the Olivier stage and on which photos are often projected.

The theater's National Theater Live Initiative aims to show a variety of plays in selected cinemas around the world.
