history

Origin of name

Those Banke 'was the Bishop of Winchester claimed, which the mansion (manor) in the Liberty of the Clink belonged. A historical map in the archives of the Duchy of Lancaster shows "the way to the banke" ("the way to the bank area"). In 1554 the area was recorded as the Banke syde and means the road along the southern bank of the Themes. In 1860 Southwark Street (A3200) was built to connect the bridges between Blackfriars and London Bridges. This can be seen as the southern limit of the bankside.

Urban development

The Bankside is the river side of the former Liberty of the Clink and Liberty of Paris Garden administrative units . In Elizabethan times , these areas, separated by the river, were outside the jurisdiction of the City of London . Various entertainment companies were able to settle here, which were strictly forbidden elsewhere. There was animal hunt entertainment here , such as bearbaiting and bullbaiting , prostitution and also theater plays. The first theaters in London (after The Theater ) were built here; so the Rose , the Hope Theater , the Swan and the famous Globe Theater by William Shakespeare. The history of this place can be studied on the basis of a description that includes life in and around one of the oldest buildings on Bankside (49 Bankside) to this day: "The house by the Thames: and the people who lived there". It has been renovated over the past few decades and has become a major tourist destination. The Bankside skyline is dominated by the former Bankside Power Station , which now houses the Tate Gallery of Modern Art .

A serious redesign in the 2010s was the "Bankside 123 Complex" on Southwark Street. Together the three buildings accommodate 5,000 employees. Bankside 1, also known as the Blue Fin Building , was built for the newspaper company IPC Media (now TI Media ), while Bankside 2 and 3 are used by two divisions of the Omnicom Group , the media agencies OMD and PHD . Today around 50,000 to 60,000 people work in Bankside in over 1,000 business areas. 490 of them in the new business district of the so-called "Better Bankside".

administration

Bankside is part of the Borough and Bankside Community Council which corresponds to the constituencies of Cathedrals and Chaucer . They belong to the constituencies of Bermondsey and Old Southwark.

traffic

Blackfriars Bridge has been a link to North London since 1754 and Southwark Bridge has linked the area with central London from 1819 . In 2000, a pedestrian bridge called the Millennium Bridge was built between Tate Modern and St Paul's Cathedral , which houses a bicycle rental station at each of its two entrances . The Blackfriars station was part of the Thameslink Program redesigned in 2012 and the Bankside binds better now on to the north of London. Other railway stations connected to Bankside are London Bridge Station and Southwark Underground Station . These transport connections are supplemented by the hydrogen-powered buses on lines 381 and RV1 .
