Southwark is an underground station on the London Underground in the London Borough of Southwark . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 1, at the intersection of Blackfriars Road and The Cut . In 2014, 14.15 million passengers used this station served by the Jubilee Line . There is a direct connection to Waterloo East Railway Station . Nearby attractions include the Globe Theater and the Tate Modern . The historic center of Southwark is not here, but further southeast at Borough station .

The station opened on September 24, 1999. In contrast to most of the other stations on the eastern extension of the Jubilee Line towards Docklands and Stratford , there was not enough space here to set architectural standards on a large scale. The entrance building designed by the architects MacCormac Jamieson Prichard is rather flat; in the future it will be extended to an office building. In addition, the station had to be built under and around a Victorian railway viaduct. This required the construction of two halls on different levels.

The first hall on the surface forms the core of the station. Daylight falls through the 15.95 meter high glass roof, which also illuminates the lower level. On one side there is a 39.9 meter long glass wall in which 660 artfully cut blue pieces of glass are embedded, which were created by the artist Alexander Beleschenko. From this hall, tube-like escalator shafts lead down to the second hall at the level of the platforms. There are two “buoys” made of glass and steel at both ends of the hall. The walls are made of stainless steel that has purposely not been polished to a shine. According to the architect in charge Richard MacCormac, the design should be based on designs by Karl Friedrich Schinkel , one of the most important Prussian architects of the 19th century. As in the Jubilee Line extension tunnel stations that opened in 1999, the platforms in Southwark are separated from the tracks by platform screen doors.
