Borough is a London Underground station in the historic center of the London Borough of Southwark . It is in the Travelcard tariff zone 1, at the intersection of Borough High Street and Marshalsea Road. In 2013, 4.89 million passengers used this station served by the Northern Line .

The station was opened on December 18, 1890 by the City and South London Railway (now the city branch of the Northern Line), as part of the world's first electrically operated underground line. The route then led from Stockwell to King William Street . The latter station was closed on February 24, 1900 after the commissioning of a new line to Moorgate .

During the Second World War , the Southwark County Administration converted part of the disused tunnel between the Borough and the south bank of the Thames into an air raid shelter . It had six entrances along Borough High Street and was in use from June 1940 to May 1945. From July 16, 1922 to February 23, 1925, the Borough station was closed. During this time, the tunnel profile was expanded to increase capacity. Another closure took place in 1999 between July 2nd and September 5th, in order to be able to renew all track and signal systems.
