National Theater Live

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

National Theater Live is an initiative of the Royal National Theater in London that aims to bring various plays to the big screens around the world. The theater thus joins a growing group of renowned ensembles, theaters and opera houses that want to make their productions accessible to a larger audience at low cost in this way - others are the New York Metropolitan Opera , the British houses of the Royal Ballet , the Royal Opera House and the Royal Shakespeare Company, as well as the Russian Bolshoi Ballet .

Overview

In June 2009, a play was broadcast live in the cinema for the very first time. The first season of live broadcasts started with Phèdre , in which Helen Mirren played a leading role. A total of 50,000 people from 19 countries around the world watched the play. The plays are now shown in up to 1,400 cinemas in 25 countries. The number of viewers has also grown. The play The Audience , for example, the first production shown in 2013 that was not staged at the National Theater, saw 180,000 people live in the cinema. By 2016, approximately 4 million viewers saw the plays in cinemas around the world. All plays are broadcast in HD. The live broadcast of the play Hamlet had the largest audience up to that point. This play aired on October 15, 2015. Benedict Cumberbatch portrayed Hamlet. More than 225,000 spectators from 25 countries watched the broadcast of the play.

In addition to Benedict Cumberbatch and Helen Mirren, other well-known film and television actors can also be seen in the live productions of the National Theater. In the summer of 2013, viewers could watch Macbeth live in cinemas with Kenneth Branagh and Alex Kingston . In January 2014, the play Coriolanus with Tom Hiddleston and Mark Gatiss was broadcast live in cinemas. On September 16, 2014, Gillian Anderson played Blanche DuBois in the play A Streetcar Named Desire . On April 16, 2015, the play The Hard Problem with Damien Molony was shown in cinemas worldwide. A month later, Ralph Fiennes appeared in the National Theater Live production Man and Superman .

In the course of the COVID-19 pandemic , the National Theater made recordings of the series available as a stream on YouTube for the first time from April 2020 under the slogan "National Theater at Home" . Selected pieces, released weekly on Thursdays and seen online for a week each, included One Man, Two Guvners (2011), both alternating versions of Nick Dears Frankenstein (2011), and Antonius and Cleopatra (2018). In the first six weeks, the pieces were viewed more than eight million times; Donations collected during the broadcasts were used to benefit artists affected by the crisis.
