Simon Montagu McBurney , OBE , (born August 25, 1957 in Cambridge ) is a British film and theater actor, author and theater director.

Life

Simon McBurney is the son of the American archaeologist and academic Charles Brian Montagu McBurney and the secretary Anne Francis Edmondstone Charles. McBurney first studied English literature at Cambridge University and then learned drama at the École Jacques Lecoq in Paris. He has been one of Emma Thompson's best friends since he was a teenager .

In 1983 he founded the Théâtre de Complicité with Annabel Arden , Fiona Gordon and Marcello Magni . It is a touring theater that has achieved international fame with the use of multimedia techniques (music, film, slide, tape), body-hugging representation in the sense of Lecoq and philosophical explanations. Several productions have also been made into feature films such as Mnemonic (1999) and The Elephant Vanishes (2003).

In 2002 he directed Bertolt Brecht's The Resistant Rise of Arturo Ui . It was performed at the New York Pace University theater in late 2002, starring Al Pacino .

McBurney had a long relationship with the Australian actress Jacqueline McKenzie before he met the concert pianist Cassie Yukawa on the street in 2007: "Just by chance, completely extraordinary chance. We literally just saw each other. I didn't believe that such things were true. " McBurney and Cassie Yukawa have been married since 2016 and have three children, Noma, Teyo and Mamie.

McBurney is an ambassador for Survival International, an organization that cares about the rights of indigenous people.
