The Duchess (English-language original title: The Duchess ) is a British drama from 2008 . Directed by Saul Dibb , who together with Jeffrey Hatcher and Anders Thomas Jensen also wrote the screenplay based on the biography Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire (see Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire ) by Amanda Foreman .

action

England, towards the end of the 18th century: Georgiana Spencer married the Duke of Devonshire at the age of 17 ; the marriage was arranged by her mother. The only claims the Duke has of this marriage are loyalty and the birth of an heir. Georgiana soon became interested in politics and became a supporter of the Whig Party. Georgiana gives birth to two daughters, which the Duke blames her. When the couple spends some time in Bath on a cure, they meet Lady Elisabeth Foster (Bess). She quickly becomes Georgiana's closest friend, who arranges for Bess to return to London and live with the Devonshires from now on. The Duke soon takes Bess as his lover. This gives her the opportunity, with the help of his influence, to get her three sons from her first marriage back. Georgiana first tries to defend herself against this ménage-à-trois and finally demands the same rights for herself. When she tells the Duke that she wants to take the politician Charles Gray , whom she has long supported politically, as a lover, he rapes her. As a result, the long-awaited heir named Hart is born.

Shortly thereafter, with the help of Bess, Georgiana begins an affair with Gray that soon becomes public. The Duke forces Georgiana to end the relationship, otherwise they will never see their children again and it will mean the end of Grey's promising career. Despite Grey's urging to leave the Duke, she decides against her love luck and for her children. Shortly afterwards she realizes that she is expecting a child from Gray. On the orders of the Duke, she is secretly brought to the country accompanied by Bess. Here she gives birth to her daughter Eliza and has to give her into the care of Grey's family shortly after the birth. Georgiana returns to London, where she meets Gray again at a reception. He tells her that he will get married soon and that their daughter will be fine.

In the end credits, the further life story of the historical personalities is told through text overlays: The Ménage à trois lasted until Georgiana's death. With Georgiana's blessing, Bess became the second Duchess of Devonshire. Charles Gray later became Prime Minister. Eliza secretly met her mother and named her daughter after her.

Reviews

Wesley Lovell wrote on www.oscarguy.com that he was not sure what exactly the film's trailer was showing - but it was breathtaking to watch. Keira Knightley show a preference for historical costumes.

Christina Tilmann titled her review with the Princess of Hearts . For them, the film is much more than a costume film. He draws parallels with the fate of Lady Diana , who is a descendant of Georgiana Spencer. It is the story of a marriage that is befitting , but unhappy. It is a small miracle that Ralph Fiennes could at least arouse understanding for the dry, tough and emotionless husband.

The organizers of the Toronto International Film Festival wrote that the film showed "terrifyingly modern" desire, defeat and scandal. Knightley is exceptional in the role of a woman who influenced the politics of the country, although she had no power over her own fate.
