Richard McCabe (* 1960 in Glasgow , Scotland as William McCabe ) is a British actor in theater, film and television. He played character roles in cinema productions such as Jane Austen's Seduction , Notting Hill , Master & Commander - Until the End of the World , The Eternal Gardener and The Duchess .

life and career

Richard McCabe was born in Glasgow in 1960. Born in Scotland, he received his training at the traditional London drama school, the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). McCabe has mainly worked as a stage actor since the early 1980s, he is one of the prominent artists of the Royal Shakespeare Company . He played Iago in Michael Attenborough's production of Othello at the Royal Shakespeare Theater in the 1999 summer season and later at the Barbican Theater . Since 2005 he has performed regularly at the Chichester Festival Theater . McCabe was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for the Laurence Olivier Award in 1994, which he won in 2013. In addition to his theater career, McCabe has also been active in film and television for around 30 years. He also composed the music for many plays.

Richard McCabe made his screen debut in Roger Michell's 1995 romantic drama Jane Austen's Seduction . It was director Michell who gave him another small guest role in his hit film Notting Hill with Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant in 1999 , namely the part of the unsuccessful restaurant owner Tony. In the 2000s, she appeared in films such as Peter Weir's adventure film Master & Commander - Until the End of the World , in Vanity Fair - Vanity Fair by director Mira Nair , in Fernando Meirelle's Oscar-winning film The Eternal Gardener , in Peter Greenaway's historical drama Nightwatching or in the cinema production Die Herzogin by director Saul Dibb. He was last seen in 2013 in the second directorial work by actor Ralph Fiennes , in the romantic drama The Invisible Woman .

Richard McCabe's numerous television appearances between 1985 and 2013 include: Bulman (1987), Between the Lines (1994), The Vice (1999), Der Preis des Verbrechens (2000), Waking the Dead (On behalf of the dead ( 2003), Inspector Barnaby (2006), Lewis - Der Oxford Krimi (2008), Spooks - In the sights of MI5 (2009) or Borgia (2013). He played a more complex TV role as Nyberg from 2008 to 2012 in the TV series Kommissar Wallander at the side of Kenneth Branagh and Sarah Smart based on the novels of the Swedish bestselling author Henning Mankell .

He won the 2015 Tony Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of British Prime Minister Harold Wilson in Peter Morgan's play The Audience with Helen Mirren in the lead role as Queen Elizabeth II .
