Eye in the Sky is a British thriller of the South African director Gavin Hood from the year 2015 . The film is based on a script by Guy Hibbert, starring Aaron Paul , Helen Mirren and Alan Rickman among others. The film is about a military drone mission that starts a conflict when a civilian enters the area of operation. It is one of the last two films by Alan Rickman, who died on January 14, 2016 as a result of a pancreatic tumor .

action

Colonel Katherine Powell heads the UK part of an international mission to capture a group of al-Shabaab terrorists in Nairobi , including a long-sought convert who has a real role model in Samantha Louise Lewthwaite . The aerial reconnaissance for access is carried out by small and large drones: the reapers are controlled remotely from Nevada, the ornithopters and insectothopters by Kenyan agents on site. Biometrics experts from the Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam are involved in identifying the filmed individuals .

Powell convinces her Kenyan colleague to place one of his employees next to the house in which the alleged targets are located. He succeeds in flying an artificial beetle into the building, whose camera images can be used to verify that it is actually the terrorist he is looking for. As also is seen that are prepared in an adjoining room explosive belt for suspected suicide bombings, and because a use of ground troops is too risky, Powell tried because of imminent danger to obtain approval, instead of the capture of a targeted killing by means of a launched by the Reaper Hellfire -Run missile. Your legal advisor states that the rules of engagement of your original assignment prohibit this and a new permit is required. The British and American Foreign Ministers approve the air strike. At this moment, a young girl sits down in front of the target building, which is why the American drone pilot Steve Watts initially refuses to execute the order to shoot and demands that the collateral damage be recalculated . While Lieutenant General Frank Benson insists that the air strike be carried out immediately, before the suicide bombers leave the house and cause a likely larger number of civilian casualties, the British Attorney General recommends waiting until the girl has left the danger area. The UK Foreign Secretary wants to leave the decision to the Prime Minister. Powell then has a slightly more distant part of the building targeted, which can reduce the risk to below 45%, so that the politicians agree. The house is destroyed by two rockets being fired at and the terrorists are killed. Despite the change in destination, the girl also suffers fatal injuries.

production

Eye in the Sky was originally supposed to be developed by BBC Films and FilmNation Entertainment wanted to hire German director Oliver Hirschbiegel to direct the film. It didn't come to that, however, so director Gavin Hood sent the script to Xavier Marchand , chairman of Entertainment One . Marchand decided to develop the script to produce a film that would be directed by Gavin Hood. Entertainment One partnered with Raindog Films in April 2014 to produce Eye in the Sky, with Colin Firth as one of the producers. Helen Mirren and Aaron Paul were added to the cast a month later. Despite an age difference of 39 years, Fleur van Eeden is Helen Mirren's stunt double.

Hood decided to shoot the film in his home country South Africa , and work began in September 2014. Since the South African Civil Aviation Authority did not give permission for the aerial photography of the drones, they were made with the help of visual effects . Hood found suitable filming locations in various locations in South Africa, including for scenes set in Surrey or Las Vegas , for example . Filming ended on November 4, 2014. The four main actors - Rickman, Mirren, Paul and Abdi - did not meet during filming as their scenes were all filmed in different locations.
