Barkhad Abdinasir Abdi (born April 10, 1985 in Mogadishu ) is an American - Somali film actor .

Life

In 1992, at the age of seven, Barkhad Abdi and his parents fled from civil war-torn Somalia via Ethiopia to Yemen , where he grew up until 1999. Then the family won a residence permit for the USA in the green card lottery . Here they settled in Minnesota , where Abdi was later a student at Minnesota State University Moorhead . Before becoming an actor, to Abdi earned as a driver of limousine and disc jockey in Minneapolis for a living.

Abdi repeatedly came into conflict with the law. On February 2, 2004, he was arrested for buying an alcoholic drink, then not yet 21 years old. He also spent 90 days in Clay County County Jail for giving the police a false name and was fined $ 1,000. A year later, on June 1, 2005, he was sentenced to 200 days in prison, also in Clay County, for credit card fraud. On August 18, 2012, Abdi and a friend were arrested in Black Hawk County , Iowa, for possession of marijuana and Kathstrauch . The case was later dismissed by Iowa law enforcement.

In 2013 he could be won for a lead role in the fact-based drama Captain Phillips . For his portrayal of a Somali pirate, Abdi, for whom it was his first film role, received a BAFTA award. He has also been nominated for numerous film awards, including the Screen Actors Guild Award , the Golden Globe Award and the Oscar .
