action

Richard "Rich" Phillips is the captain of the US container ship Maersk Alabama . This will leave the port of Salala in Oman in April 2009 under his command and will make its way through the Gulf of Aden towards Mombasa . Phillips is concerned about safety on board, as he is aware of the threat of pirate attacks near Somalia , so he is having his new crew conduct some security drills. During an exercise, he notices that two boats are approaching the ship and that they continue to follow him even after an evasive maneuver . He gives the alarm and after a few driving maneuvers finally manages to use a trick to force some of the alleged pirates to turn back by fooling them into a conversation with a military helicopter, which is supposedly already on its way. The rest of the remaining pirates are forced to give up the chase when they suffer an engine failure. Some members of the team tried to convince Captain Phillips to keep the Alabama more distance from the Somali coast. However, he rejects the proposal, citing the schedule and other dangers.

The next day, four of the pirates are coming back and make a second attempt to the ship board ; The crew can see the boat early on by radar and also send an emergency call , but this time they fail to shake off the pirates. Despite attempts to drive them away with water cannons , they are finally able to board Maersk Alabama , but the pirates' speedboat is lost. Phillips instructs his crew to hide in the engine room while he and two officers face the pirates.

Their leader, Abduwali Muse, does not want to be satisfied with the offer of 30,000 US dollars from the safe and goes to look for the team together with the captain. Since this has meanwhile switched off the engine and electricity, the ship is unable to maneuver and there is no lighting. The youngest of the pirates injured his foot when he stepped on broken glass that was scattered by the crew. Eventually they manage to lure Muse into the engine room alone and overwhelm it. With him as a hostage, the team is now trying to force their captain free again and negotiating that the pirates, along with their leader and the US $ 30,000 , should leave the ship with a free-fall lifeboat. Muse, however, manages at the last moment to get Phillips into the lifeboat during the prisoner exchange and to flee with him. Thus Maersk Alabama and their crew are free again, but the pirates now have Captain Phillips in their power and want to bring him to Somalia to extort a ransom for him.

Since the crew does not want to abandon their captain, they follow the slow lifeboat with the Alabama until the US Navy finally arrives with the destroyer USS Bainbridge . In the stuffy air on board the completely closed lifeboat, conflicts break out among the pirates again and again, and they cannot reach their mother ship by radio, with which they wanted to go back to shore together. Meanwhile, the captain of the USS Bainbridge contacts the kidnappers and tries to negotiate with them. However, he is strictly instructed not to let the boat come to the coast under any circumstances. The pirates refuse to negotiate, though Phillips tries to persuade Muse to give up; the latter explains to him that he has come too far and that he cannot go back to Somalia without some booty. In doing so, he repeatedly addresses the effects of globalization , as they are actually all fishermen who, due to the overfishing of the waters off Somalia, have seen no other way out than to engage in piracy. Phillips also tries to develop a relationship with the youngest member of the group, whom he connects with the cut foot.

In the meantime, two more warships, the frigate USS Halyburton and the amphibious assault ship USS Boxer , have arrived, as well as a SEAL team that is now in command. That night Phillips dares to try to escape; he jumps out of the boat and the pirates start shooting at him. Since the Navy cannot identify in the dark whether it is Phillips, they take no action and the captain is brought back to the lifeboat, where one of the pirates beats him up. The next day the SEAL team begins a deception: their leader explains to the pirates that they are ready for negotiations, but that Muse has to go on board the warship to meet an alleged delegation of the tribal elders , with whom they continue would negotiate. Muse accepts the offer and is picked up with a RIB , which not only attaches a tow to the lifeboat, but also secretly a listening device.

At the stern of the USS Bainbridge , three snipers are positioned to kill the pirates with one blow. This does not succeed for a long time because not all shooters have a clear firing path. Meanwhile, Phillips, who is fully aware of the situation and the imminent access, writes a farewell letter to his wife - where he is interrupted by a pirate. Thereupon a fight breaks out, as a result of which one of the pirates wants to execute him. Only through a clever maneuver with the tow rope do the shooters get a free firing path at the last moment and can kill all three remaining pirates at the same moment. Muse is arrested and later sentenced to 33 years in prison in the United States. Phillips is in shock, but can be rescued with minor injuries and is already back as captain a year later.

Filming

Three quarters of the film were made at sea. The role of Maersk Alabama was taken over by Alexander Maersk . The USS Bainbridge was portrayed by the US destroyer USS Truxtun .

reception

Financial success

The production budget for the film was $ 55 million. In the first two weeks, the film grossed more than $ 53 million in the United States and Canada. The total then totaled over $ 218 million worldwide.

criticism

The film received a largely positive response in the American media.

"Paul Greengrass impresses with this docu-drama without using the same emotions as in his previous works."

- Scott Foundas : Variety

“While watching this excruciatingly suspenseful kidnapping thriller, I suffered from“ Greengrass Disease ”: a two-hour panic attack that only Paul Greengrass can induce. In his 9/11 nightmare “United 93” and his Northern Ireland drama “Bloody Sunday” I had the same symptoms: shallow breath, cardiac arrhythmia, a high pitch that escaped somewhere between my clenched teeth and a tendency to lean against the red plush to cling to my seat. "

- Peter Bradshaw : The Guardian

Critics also praised the film in Germany.

"Supported by a great direction with motivated and impeccable actors," Captain Phillips "has become a first-class thriller drama on the high seas with minimal lengths."

- Lars Bieker : filmfutter.com

“Greengrass repeatedly opens up very basic associations to the viewer, which culminates in the violent liberation action for the captain by the most powerful military machine in the world in a climax of almost unbearable ambivalence - the triumph is at the same time a crushing tragedy. If the filmmaker is still unable to fully meet his high political and educational aspirations, this is mainly due to the fact that the Somali kidnappers, despite the committed (physical) effort of the four actors, have very little individual profile compared to their starved victim. This small dramaturgical imbalance is hardly significant in view of the staging force of the film. "

Trivia

The new actor Barkhad Abdi was surprisingly given the role of pirate leader during the casting and played it so convincingly that he received the BAFTA award and was nominated for numerous film prizes. However, his fee for this first role was only $ 65,000.
