Refugee Incident

On the night of June 22, 2018, the ship, which was in liner service between Malta and Libya , took 113 refugees on board with the support of the lifeline Lifeline . The ship had been asked to rescue the Italian coast guard . After waiting a few days before Pozzallo (Sicily) for permission to dock in an Italian port, the Italian government finally gave it.

It was the first time that a merchant ship with rescued persons on board had been refused entry into an Italian port. Before Interior Minister Matteo Salvini (Lega Nord) gave the approval, Danish Immigration Minister Inger Stöjberg announced that she would ask Italy to act in writing in view of the acute situation.

A spokesman for the World Shipowners Organization ( ICS) pointed out the limited possibilities of merchant ships to take in rescued persons :

"Merchant ships are not a safe place for the rescued, our crews are not trained to take care of the often traumatized and physically weak people."

description

The two-stroke , seven-cylinder engine was built under license by Hitachi Zosen Diesel & Engineering. The maximum speed of the ship is given as 25  knots , the cruising speed of 18 knots.
