International Chamber of Shipping

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) or International Schiffahrts-chamber is a globally active commercial shipping organization. It is not a member of shipping companies, but of national ship owner organizations. The ICS was founded in London in 1921 and is based there to this day.

history

Around 80 percent of the world's merchant shipping tonnage is represented in the ICS. The ICS deals with numerous topics related to merchant shipping. It represents the interests of its members and also lobbies . One of their main activities is with the International Maritime Organization(IMO) to be active. The IMO is the UN organization that deals with the safety of life at sea and the protection of the maritime environment. There are numerous more specialized associations (e.g. owners of bulk carriers, tankers, container ships, passenger and cruise ships). The ICS, on the other hand, represents the interests of everyone and also those of companies that operate with rented ships. The ICS also maintains contacts with the World Customs Organization , the International Telecommunication Union , the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the World Meteorological Organization and other international organizations.

Since October 2011 the ICS has its office in the Baltic Exchange . Its chairman has the title "Chairman". The main body is called the “Maritime Committee”. About 14 of the 22 members of the European Community Shipowners' Associations (an association of 22 national shipowning organizations) are also ICS members.
