The RESG Walsum (officially: Roll-, Eis- und Sportgemeinschaft Walsum 1937 eV ) is a sports club from the Duisburg district of Walsum . It includes the departments of roller hockey and figure skating . The roller hockey division is one of the most successful in German-speaking countries.

history

The entire club was founded in 1937 with the aim of professionalizing roller hockey and art skating in the region. Already in 1940 Else Hibbeln was able to win the regional and gaum championship in figure skating, with which the RESG positioned itself next to the roller figure skating strongholds of Dortmund and Essen at an early stage . During the Second World War , the facility on Römerstrasse was destroyed, but could be rebuilt, which ensured that sports operations could continue.

In 1947 Herbert Stephan from Breslau could be hired as a trainer, later he became, among other things, a deputy on the board of the art skating commission of the German Roller Sports Association . Under his leadership, Else Hibbeln belonged to the top German class in the years that followed and took second place at the German Championships in Nuremberg in 1952 . Even under the influence of festive evening events, which were often attended by world and European champions, the RESG experienced a sporting boom in the 1950s. Shortly afterwards, however, when the running track could no longer be used due to mountain damage, the upswing was interrupted.

On February 1, 1964, the club's own carnival show took place for the first time, the success of which has continued to this day. At the end of 1972, the former vice world and European champion Franz Ningel was hired as a coach. Under his leadership, numerous titles and successes were celebrated in the following years, both on a regional, state and national level. In 1982 there was a surprise breakup with Franz Ningel in spring, his successor was 25-year-old Annette Ziegenhagen, who, however, gave up the position of trainer shortly afterwards due to lack of time. This was again taken over by Ningel in the same year. In 1983 Judith Möller and Oliver Kellermann became national champions in the master class and achieved 4th place in the following European championship in France .

The first major upheaval occurred in 2004. After internal differences, a large number of the high-performance runners left the RESG together with trainer Katharina Finke and founded an independent club. In 2005, Ningel said goodbye again and handed over the position of head coach to Karin Engstfeld. In 2009 financial difficulties forced the association to separate from Engstfeld and their assistant Hannes cabinet. Sarah Schweitzer then became the new head coach, and in 2011 Michaela Kurek, who was already a runner with the RESG, joined the club as a trainer.
