European Community Shipowners' Associations
The European Community Shipowners' Associations (ECSA, in German for 'European Association of Shipping Company Associations') was founded in 1965 as the' Comité des Associations d'Armateurs des Communautés Européennes' (CAACE). In 1990 she changed her name. Members are all 21 shipping associations in EU countries as well as the Norwegian shipping association.
The ECSA is an industry association and an interest group . It represents the interests of its members vis-à-vis EU institutions (e.g. EU Commission ), EU member states or groups of member countries and also vis-à-vis international institutions (e.g. UNO).
The ECSA has a number of working groups focused on specific subjects or subject areas (these are called “committee”, “working group” or “task force”, e.g. 'Safety & environment Committee', 'Air emissions working group', 'Piracy Taskforce' ').
The ECSA has a secretariat in Brussels (Secretary General: Alfons Guinier) and a 'Board of Directors'. President of the ECSA was Juan Riva until December 2013; then Thomas Rehder (until then "Vice-President") was elected to this office.
The ECSA cooperates with other institutions on a case-by-case basis, including the ' World Shipping Council ' founded in 2000 .
