Michael Brückner (born December 6, 1969 in Heidelberg ) is a German composer and musician in the field of electronic music with a focus on ambient , drone and Berlin School . He lives and works in Mainz .

Career

Musical beginnings

Inspired by meditative mantra chants , which he got to know while doing yoga , Michael Brückner began producing atmospheric music for the first time at the age of 23. He experimented with sound generation and tried his hand at his first compositions, with a focus soon on electronic music. As a counterbalance, he has since improvised regularly on the piano.

Self-expelled albums

After initial simple experiments in the home studio, Michael Brückner began producing albums in 1994, which, however, had not yet been assigned to a clear musical genre. There are influences from rock and world music , jazz and different styles of electronic music. Over the course of more than two decades, a large number of albums have been created that can be obtained directly from the artist or via download portals.

Releases by label

At the end of 2008, pieces that had been accessible on a blog for a short time, were re-mixed and mastered, as an EP under the title Kissing Underneath The Mistletoe on the net label INQB8R from Latvia, followed by a second EP in 2009, Occasional Chemistry, with again remastered pieces , this time from older, privately released albums. At the beginning of 2010 the album Ombra was published as an HQ download on the website of the Russian ambient community Ambione , but has not been there since a fundamental redesign in 2012. Both INQB8R and Ambione are non-profit organizations, so the downloads are free of charge.

In 2012 Michael Brückner's first album, 100 Million Miles Under The Stars, was released on a commercial label, SynGate Records , followed a few months later by Eleventh Sun on the SynGate sub-label Luna.

In 2013 Le Jardin Oublie appeared on the net label Ancient Language Records , and Naura on Klangffektstoff . This was followed in 2014 by Thirteen Rites Of Passage and the album Sparrows (in cooperation with Detlev Everling), also both on SynGate, and Ombra - Revisited on BI-ZA Records, as well as the collaboration Hochofen (Plataforma Records) with the Brazilian Gustavo Jobim. The album Two was released in 2015, a collaboration between Brückner and drummer Thomas "Tommy" Betzler , as well as guest musicians Fryderyk Jona and Sammy David, again on SynGate Records. In 2016 the albums Hikari (ambiOfusion) and "Troi Briques" (SynGate / Wave) came out.

In addition, since 2011 numerous pieces not included on other albums have been released in various ambient and electronica compilations.

Collaboration with other artists

Michael Brückner has worked regularly with befriended musicians for the past 20 years. Michael Brückner has formed the art rock band B4 SUNRISE since 2000 with the guitarist Wolfgang Bechtluft and the keyboardist and singer Reinhold Krämer, both active in the Rheinhessen music scene since the late 1970s . Both can also be heard on several of his solo albums. In 2004 an album was created with Wolfgang Bechtluft under the name "Bechtluft-Brückner Project".

In 2012 a joint album was released with the Dutch electronic musician Bert Hülshoff, who released under the project name "Phrozenlight".

Other companions are keyboardist, producer and singer Klaus Chmielewski (phase 4), various singers, various guitarists, in particular his brother Steffen Brückner, a death metal guitarist, and electronic composer and flautist Hans-Dieter Schmidt (in the 1980s Years keyboard player of the comedy rock group Feinbein, which is successful in the Frankfurt area). With Sparrows , a collaboration with Detlev Everling, another album was released in 2014 on the SynGate Records sub -label Luna. Michael Brückner also released the album Hochofen together with Gustavo Jobim in 2014 . Since 2013 he has been working regularly with Thomas "Tommy" Betzler , the former drummer of the band P'cock , who has already worked with other well-known genre greats such as Klaus Schulze and Picture Palace Music . In 2015 her first album "Two" was released.

Live performances

Due to his family and professional situation, Michael Brückner has so far only rarely been able to give concerts despite existing invitations. So u had to a. the appearance as headliner at a Russian ambient festival 2010, as well as (as a “Bechtluft-Brückner project”) as the opener of the Binger Open Air 2005 will be rejected.

In 2006 Michael Brückner gave his first public concert as a member of the trio B4 SUNRISE , several other solo appearances followed, for example in June 2012 at the Raumzeit Festival in Dortmund and in July 2013 together with Tommy Betzler at the vibration party in Hamm. For the release of the active agent sampler "Active Agent of Sound II" he performed in Berlin in September 2013, one month later at the 2013 Dinosaur Festival Festival in Bocholt, again accompanied by drummer Tommy Betzler. On the occasion of the Luminale 2014 Michael Brückner played live in the St. Peter Church in Frankfurt, later published in the album "Two Letters From Crimea". In 2015 he played with Mathias Brussels at the Cosmic Night Festival in Brussels, Belgium.

In addition, he takes part at irregular intervals in group improvisations of the ambient collective "Elektro-Kartell Lounge", which is active in the Rhine-Main area.

style

Michael Brückner's music is characterized by a wide range of different styles that make easy categorization difficult. His works include pieces from the field of ambient , drone or Berlin School , but the genres chillout , electronica and synth-pop are also served. Excursions into the areas of progressive rock (especially with B4 SUNRISE) and jazz can also be found, as well as more rhythmic works in the direction of trance and techno . Nevertheless, there is always a recognizable, personal note that runs like a red thread through Michael Brückner's work. This often includes spherical intros and complex sequencer work, as well as pure piano passages. Brückner is also known for the use of language and voices as a means of sound, less than sung lyrics. More recent releases can increasingly be assigned to "classical" electronic music with long pieces, extensive intros and driving sequences, whereby these are mostly concept albums that deal with a topic comprehensively musically. Michael Brückner's albums are less a compilation of stand-alone pieces than complete works in several parts or movements.
