The Batzenhäusl is one of the oldest inns in Bolzano . It is located on Andreas-Hofer-Straße . It has been a listed building since 1953.

history

For centuries it was a tavern of the nearby Teutonic Order , whose coming was moved in 1404 to the nearby Weggenstein-Deutschhaus mansion . Its name may have something to do with the old denomination of the coin Batzen , especially since wine was always sold here. Around 1900 the Batzenhäusl developed into a poets and artists' bar known throughout the German-speaking area, which was depicted on many contemporary paintings and postcards. The house experienced its heyday as a meeting point for artists when the painter Franz Defregger (1835–1921) stayed in Bolzano. The artist's willingness to donate, encouraged by the capable landlord Engelbert Trebo and the wine, increased from year to year until 1914, when the Batzenhäusl was furnished with over 200 paintings, drawings and individual sculptures. The remainder of this Batzenhäusl picture collection is now at Prösels Castle in Völs am Schlern .

Since the First World War, when Bolzano became Italian, the house has also been called Cà de Bezzi . Above all, the decline in German guests caused the establishment to close on March 1, 1928 (for the first time in the 20th century).

Today the Batzenhäusl is an inn brewery .
