The USS Halyburton (FFG-40) is a frigate of the US Navy . She belongs to the Oliver Hazard Perry class . It is named after William D. Halyburton, Jr. , who perished during the Battle of Okinawa and was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously for his actions .
history
FFG-40 was commissioned in 1979 and keeled at Todd Pacific Shipyards in 1980 . The frigate was launched in 1981 and put into service in 1984.
In 1985 the Halyburton took part on the side of the USS Iowa (BB-61) in the NATO exercise Ocean Safari 85 in the Atlantic, and in 1988 these two ships also sailed for NATO. In 1992 the frigate was moved to the Mediterranean Sea as escort for the USS John F. Kennedy (CV-67) . With the USS Gettysburg (CG-64) , the Halyburton visited two ports (including Cape Town) in South Africa from November 9-14 , 1994. This was the first friendship visit by US ships to South Africa since February 1967. On November 30, the two ships were ordered to help the Achille Lauro , a cruise ship that caught fire in the Horn of Africa .
In 2005 the frigate was used in the Caribbean and was able to seize almost eight tons of cocaine during these voyages together with its sister ship USS Boone (FFG-28) . In 2006 the Halyburton practiced submarine hunting with Peruvian naval vessels in the Silent Forces Exercise .
In 2009 the Halyburton was relocated to the Indian Ocean. It was used to combat piracy off Somalia . In April, she and the USS Bainbridge (DDG-96) guarded the region while the captain of Maersk Alabama was being taken hostage after the failed attack on the ship .
On September 6, 2014, the Halyburton in Mayport , Florida was decommissioned.
