List of Oliver Hazard Perry class frigates
The list of frigates of the Oliver Hazard Perry class includes all units of the Oliver Hazard Perry class of the United States Navy as well as license builds. This class is guided missile frigates . A total of 51 frigates were built for the US Navy, but all of them have since been decommissioned or given to friendly navies. Another four ships were built in the United States and immediately handed over to the Royal Australian Navy .
construction
The first unit was ordered in 1973. In June 1975, the first of which was Perry on down Kiel . After almost two years of construction, the first unit was put into service in December 1977. The last ship in the class was ordered in 1984. She was laid down three years later. In August 1989 she was put into service.
Their body numbers run from FFG-7 to FFG-16, from FFG-19 to FFG-34, from FFG-36 to FFG-43 and from FFG-45 to FFG-61. Four units (FFG-17, FFG-18, FFG-35 and FFG-44) were built for the Royal Australian Navy in the United States. FFG-1 to FFG-6 are assigned to the ships of the Brooke class . The numbering continues for a new ship class, so the Perrys do not start at FFG-1.
The Perrys were built in two different lengths. The short hulls are shorter (133.5 meters) than the more modern long hulls (135.9 meters). Both variants are 13.5 meters wide. A total of 21 shorter units were built for the US Navy.
The frigates were built at three different shipyards:
Name of the shipyard | number |
---|---|
Bath Iron Works | 24 |
Todd Pacific Shipyards , Seattle | 9 |
Todd Pacific Shipyards, San Pedro | 18th |
The class was not replaced by a classical model frigate, but by Littoral Combat Ship of Freedom - and Independence class . So far, three units of each class have been put into service: the USS Freedom (LCS-1) 2008 and the USS Independence (LCS-2) 2010 are the type ships.

Other operators
In addition to Australia, Spain and the Republic of China also had ships of the Oliver Hazard Perry class built. Often the units decommissioned from the US Navy are transferred to other states that have the status of a major non-NATO ally , or are beneficiaries of the Foreign Assistance Act :
- Australia
The Royal Australian Navy had four ships built in the United States and later built two Adelaide-class units itself . These are FFG-17, FFG-18, as well as FFG-35 and FFG-44, all of which were built at Todd Pacific Shipyards, Seattle (TODS). They later had the three short-hull variants converted into the longer variant.
The ships were named HMAS Adelaide (FFG-17), HMAS Canberra (FFG-18), HMAS Sydney (FFG-35) and HMAS Darwin (FFG-44). All were decommissioned from 2005 to 2017 one after another, the first two sunk as artificial reefs, the other two demolished. The two self-built units have been in service with the Chilean Navy since 2020.
- Egypt
The Egyptian Navy received four frigates: Alexandria (F911) (ex- Copeland (FFG-25)), Taba (F916) (ex- Gallery (FFG-26)), Sharm El-Sheikh (F901) (ex- Fahrion (FFG -22)) and Toushka (F906) (ex- Lewis B. Puller (FFG-23)).
- Bahrain
The Bahraini Navy received the former USS Jack Williams (FFG-24) in 1996 and renamed it Sabha (90) . A second unit is to be added with the former USS Robert G Bradley .
- Mexico
The Mexican Navy will receive the ex-USS Curts (FFG-38) and the USS McClusky (FFG-41). The latter unit will be decommissioned in 2014. [outdated]
- Pakistan
The Pakistani Navy received a frigate in 2010. The former USS McInerney (FFG-8) received another overhaul for $ 65 million. and was then renamed PNS Alamgir . Between 2014 and 2016, Pakistan is to receive the ex-USS Klakring (FFG-42), ex-USS De Wert (FFG-45) and the ex-USS Robert G. Bradley (FFG-49). [obsolete] [obsolete] [obsolete]
- Poland
Poland got two ships and named them ORP Gen. K. Pułaski (272) and ORP Gen. T. Kościuszko (273) .
- Republic of China
The Navy of the Republic of China built eight units under the name of the Cheng Kung class . Under the Taiwan Relations Act , the USS Taylor (FFG-50), USS Gary (FFG-51), USS Carr (FFG-52) and USS Elrod (FFG-55) are to be sold to Taiwan. The Taylor , Garry and Elrod are still in active service but will be retired in 2015. [obsolete] The Carr has been out of service since 2013.
