The USS Hawes (FFG-53) is a United States Navy frigate and belonged to the Oliver Hazard Perry class . It was named after Rear Admiral Richard E. Hawes .

history

FFG-53 was commissioned in 1981 and keeled at Bath Iron Works in 1983 . In February 1984 the frigate was launched and was christened. A year later it was put into service in the US Navy.

In 1987 the Hawes sailed the Persian Gulf during Operation Earnest Will to protect tankers from attacks in the Iran-Iraq war . In 1992 the frigate sailed in European waters, including during the multilateral exercise BALTOPS in the Baltic Sea.

In 2000 the Hawes was escorting the USS George Washington (CVN-73) in the Mediterranean and Indian Oceans. After the terrorist attack on the destroyer USS Cole (DDG-67) , the Hawes was one of the first US ships to reach the port of Aden to support the Cole . In 2005 the ship moved with the USS Mahan (DDG-72) and USS Mitscher (DDG-57) to the Persian Gulf, where she conducted exercises with several Allied navies. In 2009, the Hawes spent six months in the Caribbean intercepting drug smugglers.

On December 10, 2010, the Hawes was decommissioned. It is being exploited as a parts store for sister ships in the Inactive Ships Maintenance Facility in Philadelphia .
