The USS Nicholas (FFG-47) is a United States Navy frigate and belongs to the Oliver Hazard Perry class . It was named after Samuel Nicholas , the first Commandant of the Marine Corps .

history

FFG-47 was commissioned in 1980 and laid down at Bath Iron Works in September 1982 . In April 1983 the frigate was launched and was christened. Godmother was Elizabeth Tryon, a descendant of Nicholas, who had christened the USS Nicholas (DD-449) in 1942 . In March 1984 the frigate entered service as the USS Nicholas .

In 1988, the frigate took part in Operation Earnest Will and escorted tankers through the Strait of Hormuz . Two years later, during the Gulf War , the frigate was again in the Persian Gulf. There she protected the battleships USS Missouri (BB-63) and USS Wisconsin (BB-64) during coastal bombardments. In 1993 the Nicholas sailed in the Mediterranean, and in 1995 she took part in Operation Sharp Guard .

In 2003 the frigate visited St. Petersburg and, as the first US warship ever, visited Neum in Bosnia and Herzegovina . She then took part in a proliferation security exercise in the Mediterranean. In 2005 and 2006, trips alongside USS Saipan (LHA-2) and USS Enterprise (CVN-65) followed . In 2010, the Nicholas sailed off the coasts of Somalia and Kenya to deter piracy . On March 30, the frigate learned of suspected pirate ships in their region. It intercepted them and, after being shot at by the pirates, was able to force the three-man crew to surrender with machine gun fire. The ship was sunk. Then the mother ship was also brought in, on which two other people could be arrested.
