The USS Underwood (FFG-36) is one for Oliver Hazard Perry-class frigate belonging frigate of the US Navy , which was made in January 1983 in service. The ship had an active career of 30 years and was decommissioned in March 2013. Since then, the Underwood has been in the reserve fleet .
history
The Underwood was laid down at Bath Iron Works on July 30, 1981 and launched on February 6, 1982. First in command after commissioning on January 29, 1983 was Commander Paul Andrew C. Beck II. The ship was named after United States Navy Captain Gordon Waite Underwood (1910–1978).
In its thirty years of service, the ship was mostly used in the Caribbean region and off the coast of Latin America . The main task there was the monitoring of illegal drug traffic in cooperation with the United States Coast Guard . The Underwood also provided humanitarian aid, including after the 2010 Haiti earthquake .
On March 8, 2013, the ship was decommissioned at Naval Station Mayport in Jacksonville (Florida) and transferred to the reserve fleet. The future whereabouts of the Underwood is not yet known.
