The construction of the Doyle began in 1981 at Bath Iron Works , the launch took place in May 1982, the commissioning a year later. The ship was named after Vice Admiral James Henry Doyle .

The Doyle made four voyages in the Mediterranean, two in the Persian Gulf and one as part of the Standing Naval Forces Atlantic until 2006

In 1996 the Doyle crossed the Persian Gulf. They searched cargo ships for prohibited cargo as part of the UN embargo. The ship was later involved in Operation Desert Strike .

Known for the years 1998 and 1999 is the participation in several exercises, namely Fleet Weeks '98 and '99 and UNITAS 39-98 with nine navies from South American countries.

In 2000 the Doyle intercepted the Rebelde off Ecuador , a ship on which six tons of cocaine were found during a search . Two years later, the Doyle again participated in UNITAS , this time alongside the cruiser USS Yorktown (CG-48) .

On September 11, 2003, two years after the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 in the USA , at 8:00 a.m. zone time, the Doyle received a request for permission to allow the German frigate Niedersachsen (F 208) to pass close by . The Lower Saxony crew manned the railing, paying homage to the United States.

In 2002 the Doyle was assigned to the active reserve fleet. In this, in addition to the greatly reduced active crew, reserve personnel serve primarily on the frigate. In 2009 she was used in exercises with the Peruvian, Colombian, Uruguayan and Dutch navies.

On July 29, 2011, the Doyle was decommissioned. The plan is to sell the ship to an allied navy.
