Kusumoto Ine ( Jap. 楠本イネ , even with the usual time for women Honorativpräfix O-Ine * 31 May 1827 in Dejima , Nagasaki , † 26. August 1903 in Mamiana , Azabu ) was the first Japanese woman doctor and midwife to the Western model .

Life

Kusumoto Ine was the daughter of the German doctor and naturalist Philipp Franz von Siebold and Kusumoto Taki ( 楠 本 瀧 ; 1807-1865), also called Sonogi ( 其 扇 ). Her father worked as a doctor in the Dutch factory in Deshima until he was expelled from the country at the turn of the year 1828/29 as a result of the “Siebold Affair”. It was not until 1859 that Siebold was able to return to Japan and see his daughter again.

At the age of 14 Ine began an apprenticeship in medicine with a former student of her father who lived in Uwa. After having practiced successfully for many years as a doctor for obstetrics and gynecology in Nagasaki, she was appointed as personal physician to the empress.

Their daughter Takako ( 高 子 ; † July 18, 1938) was born on February 26, 1852 . The father was the physician Ishii Sōken ( 石井 宗 謙 ; 1796–1861). According to some authors, he raped her.

Others

  • She also used the name Shiimoto Ine ( 失 本 稲 ), where 失 本 can also be read as Shibon and is thus a reference to her father's name, while 稲 is a Chinese character ( Kanji ) with the pronunciation Ine instead of the for Names of the less common katakana spelling イ ネ .
  • Her life was processed by a Japanese artist into the musical Ine . It had its European premiere on the occasion of the 1300th anniversary of Würzburg in 2004.
