The USS Mitscher (DDG-57) is a destroyer of the US Navy , which the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer belongs.
history
The Mitscher was commissioned in December 1988 and laid down at Ingalls Shipbuilding in 1992 . The launch took place in 1993 after a construction period of 15 months. The ship was christened by Mrs. Elizabeth Ferguson after the namesake Marc Andrew Mitscher , an admiral of the Navy in the Pacific War . The ship entered service with the United States Navy in December 1994.
The Mitscher drives in the Atlantic fleet . Since commissioning, the ship has sailed several times into the Mediterranean as part of Carrier Vessel Battle Groups and participated in numerous exercises in the Caribbean. The first mission began in 1996 with the USS Enterprise (CVN 65) in the Mediterranean.
In 2001 the destroyer moved with the USS Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) into the Mediterranean and docked in Algiers , among other places . During exercises, the Mitscher drove the submarine USS Norfolk (SSN-714) and the Algerian frigate RAIS KELLICH as well as the submarine EL HADJ SLIMANE (an export version of the Soviet Kilo class ) in a combat group. In April 2003 the Mitscher crossed the Suez Canal as part of Operation Iraqi Freedom .
In 2007 Mitscher took part in the UNITAS exercise; she formed a combat group with the USS Pearl Harbor (LSD-52) , the USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG-58) and the Chilean CS Almirante Latorre (FFG 14) . In 2008 she took part in Fleet Week Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale , Florida . In early 2009, the ship relocated to take part in the multinational exercise Taurus . The exercise took place in the Mediterranean and Asia under the leadership of HMS Bulwark (L15) of the Royal Navy . In 2011, the destroyer sailed alongside the USS George HW Bush (CVN 77) in Arab and European waters.
